Hornsby is a suburb located in the Upper North Shore in the New South Wales State of Australia. The suburb is just 12 miles away from the northwest central business district of Sydney, with an administrative headquarters in Hornsby Shire. The origin of the name is traced to Samuel Henry Horne. Samuel Henry was a convict who eventually changed his ways and became a constable. The constable was famous for apprehending MacNamara and Dalton on 22 June 1830. Both men were bushrangers who terrorized the local community until they met their waterloo at the hands of the famous constable.
For his service, he was granted a settlement land which he called Hornsby Place. The land in question was established on lands inhabited by the Kurrinnggai and the Darug tribes. And the evidence shows more than 2000 aboriginal sites existed in Samuel Henry’s Hornsby Shire.
Before the constable was given part of the land, there were already settlers there, the first of whom was a European settler called Thomas Higgins, who was granted land in Old Man’s Valley. His family was also the owners of Old Man Valley Cemetery, where members of the family were buried between 1879-1931. Old Man’s Cemetery exists to date and is listed as a heritage site.
