The traditional name of the land was Cavvanbah, meaning “meeting place”. In 1770, Captain James Cook, a British explorer, cartographer and naval officer, found a safe anchorage on the land and called it Cape Byron, named after his fellow sailor Vice Admiral John ‘Foul-Weather Jack’ Byron, circumnavigator of the world and godfather of the English romantic poet George Gordon Byron.
