Gladstone is a suburb located in the northeastern region of New South Wales, Australia, approximately more than 300 kilometres from Sydney. According to the 2021 Australian Bureau of Statistics census, the suburb has only 437 residents, 52.4% females and 47.6% males, and the average age of residents is 47, much older than the Australian national average, which is 38. More than 86% of the population was born in Australia, while the rest was born in England, Ireland and Scotland. 8% of the people are Australian Aboriginals. Religious groups found in the suburb are Anglican, Catholic and Uniting Church.
Gladstone and Smithtown are considered twin towns separated by the Macleay River. Formerly known as Darkwater, Gladstone's area was marked as a village reserve in 1859. The land was surveyed as a village by Surveyor Ernst Herborn in 1864. In 1870, the village's official name became Gladstone to honour the visit and wife of the Earl of Belmore, Governor of New South Wales. Gladstone was the maiden name of the Governor’s wife. Furthermore, Darkwater Creek became known as the Belmore River. The village was once a commercial centre thanks to the wharves on its shores.
