The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that the suburb has more than 10,000 residents, and the average age of residents is 38, the same as the Australian national average. More than 70% of the residents were born in Australia, while the rest were born in England, New Zealand, South Africa and China. Religious groups in the suburb are Catholic, Anglican and Eastern Orthodox. As late as 2011, more than 80% of the population are homeowners.
In 1985, the area where Menai is situated was initially named Bangor by Owen Jones, a farmer and owner of the land, and he named the land after his hometown Bangor in Wales. In 1910, the Postmaster’s General Office officially changed its name to Menai to avoid confusion with Bangor in Tasmania. Menai was based on Menai Bridge, a village on the Menai Strait in Wales. When the suburb developed more, the eastern district became Bangor again. The suburb has 3 shopping centres around Menai Road: Menai Marketplace, Menai Metro and Menai Central. All shopping centres offer a wide range of retail stores and restaurants.
