Lane Cove was first inhabited by the Cammeraygal people of the Kuringgai Aboriginal clan, which also occupied the north shore of Porth Jackson. There are several recorded stories of a possible origin of the name of the land; one of them was first written in 1788 when Lieutenant William Bradley after he sailed along a river. Another possible origin is Lieutenant Michael Lane, a renowned cartographer during his time. Others said the name was given to the land in honour of John Lane, the son of then-London Lord Mayor and friend of Arthur Phillip, New South Wales’ first Governor.
