The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that the suburb has more than 16,000 residents, a significant increase compared to its 2011 population, which was more than 12,000. Religious groups in the suburb are Catholic, Buddhism and Hinduism, with Catholics being the most dominant religious group.
Burwood derived its name from a grant of land given by Governor Hunter to Thomas Rowley, the then-Captain of the New South Wales Corps, in August 1799. Rowley named the land Burwood Farm, based on his hometown park in England, Burwood Park. In 1812, Alexander Riley, a renowned Sydney entrepreneur, bought Rowley's land. Two years later, Riley built the first house on the land and named it Burwood Villa. In the same year, stagecoach, a four-wheeled transport vehicle, began to run between Sydney and Parramatta, making the land a staging post along the roadway and residential areas started to develop. In 1874, the land became officially a municipality.
