The Gadigal people of the Eora tribe occupied Marrickville for thousand years before Europeans arrived. During the 1830s, the Cooks River was essential for fishing livelihood. The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that 415 Gadigal people still live on the land. The land’s gentrification started in the mid-2000s, with some news dubbing it the new Paddington. The first school and the post office were built in 1864 and 1865, respectively. Marrickville was named after Thomas Chalder’s 60 acres of land, subdivided in February 1855. Chalder named it after his hometown Marrick, North Yorkshire, England. Marrickville became a municipality in 1861.
