The first school and the post office were built in 1864 and 1865, respectively. Marrickville was named after Thomas Chalder’s 60 acres of land, subdivided in February 1855. Chalder named it after his hometown Marrick, North Yorkshire, England. Marrickville became a municipality in 1861.
