Broken Hill is a town in the far west area of outback New South Wales, Australia. The town is divided into northern and southern regions by a rail line and a vast mullock heap (a mound of loose stones and waste materials from gold mining operations around the city). It is called The Silver City due to the discovery of silver ore that led to the establishment of mines. It is also sometimes referred to as the Oasis of the West and the Capital of the Outback. Aside from silver ore, Broken Hill is also rich in lode, a deposit of metalliferous ore embedded in rock formations and rock layers. The Broken Hill Lode is currently the largest lead-zinc ever discovered.
Originally known as Willyama, the Wilyakali Aboriginal People had lived in Broken Hill for over 40,000 years when the Europeans arrived from the far west of New South Wales. In 1844, Broken Hill was surrounded by the hills of the Barrier Ranges. A British explorer, Charles Sturt, was the first to call the town a broken hill. In 1883, Charles Rasp, a German boundary rider who discovered the Broken Hill Lode was the first to identify the tremendous economic potential of the ore deposits in the town.
Broken Hill has been and still is a town with abundant mining activities, which constantly caused the town to prosper in the 20th century. Some of the statistics of Broken Hill include
