North Star is a small town in the Gwydir Shire located in the northern region of New South Wales, Australia, near the Queensland border. The city is approximately 1000 square kilometres and is within the Australian Eastern Daylight Time zone. The 2011 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that the small town has only 423 residents, where 56.3% are males while the rest are females. The average age of the population is 34, and most of the population is naturally born in Australia, comprising more than 93% of the population. Other ethnicities in the community include
The primary language used by the majority of the population is English, and the most dominant religion is Anglicanism (37.9%), followed by Catholicism (24.2%), while almost 20% have no religion. The town's primary industry is agriculture, with a percentage of 68.6%.
In 1888, Europeans arrived in North Star when 5 brothers of the Sutton family owned land in the small area. During this time, most of the land was used for raising sheep. In 1910, Wilby Woolshed began to operate, leading up to the establishment of several businesses in the town. In 1908, farmers began to plant wheat crops. The city's first post office was built in 1916, following the opening of the Boggabilla railway line in 1932. This now-disused railway line brought many opportunities for the townspeople as they could sell near every station. In 1955, silos and loading facilities were constructed and expanded precisely 10 years after. The 1970s was when the small town experienced a significant increase in population. Historians stated that the population decline stemmed from falling profit margins for farmers and the inception of new technologies.
