Chatswood is a mixed commercial and residential neighbourhood in the Lower North of Syndey, New South Wales, Australia, and the administrative centre of the local government area of Willoughby City. According to the 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census, the community has more than 24,000 residents, 53% females and 47% males, and the average age of residents is 39 years, a year older than the Australian national average. More than 30% of the population was born in Australia, while the rest were born in China, South Korea, Hong Kong, India and Taiwan. The most dominant religious group in the area is Catholic.
Chatswood was named after Charlotte Harnett, wife of Richard Harnett, the then-Mayor of the Willoughby district, and the wooded landscape of the land. The land was previously called Chattie’s Wood before being named Chatswood in the mid-1800s. In 1876, residential areas were developed and expanded with the installation of a railway station in 1890. Orchard farms, dairy farms, and factories, such as Dairy Farmers Inc and Three Threes Pickle Factory, were placed on the western part of the train station. By the 1900s, the area was easily accessible by public transport. In 1983, it was officially proclaimed as a town centre and a city in 1989.
Chatswood is renowned as the cultural hub of Sydney’s north shore as it houses state-of-the-art cafes and restaurants, shopping centres, quality schools, parks, libraries, theatres, recreational facilities and a well-connected transport system. It is predominantly a commercial and residential community with a bit remnant of its industrial past. The suburb is a great place for existing residents to raise kids and prepare them to live in a community with more than enough opportunities. Some statistics of Chatswood include
