Cheltenham is a small suburbia in the northern region of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, located in the local government area of Hornsby Shire and is about 18 kilometres northwest of Sydney’s central business district. For over a thousand years, the area where Cheltenham was located was a hunting ground and meeting place for the Australian Aboriginal Wallumedegal people. Cheltenham was named after a house constructed by William Chorley, a Sydney tailor and landowner who owned the land when it was released from the Field of Mars Reserve. Chorley based the name on his hometown Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. In 1898, Chorley requested the government to build a station and name it after his property, which was not granted. The station built was called Sutherland Road, named after John Sutherland, the Minister for Public Works, from 1887 to 1889.
Today, Cheltenham is a small residential area that maintains its architectural heritage and is widely known for its fine trees and landscaped gardens.
