Bathurst is a big city in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, and is within the local government area of Bathurst Regional Council. According to the 2023 census conducted by World Population Review, the city has more than 37,000 residents, 50.1% males and 49.9% females. One interesting fact about Bathurst is that the average age of residents is below the Australian national average, which is rare, and the city’s population average age is 37, a year younger than the Australian national average. 84% of the residents were born in Australia, while others were born in England, New Zealand, India, the Philippines and Scotland. The most common religious group is Catholic, followed by Anglican.
The land where Bathurst is now situated was initially inhabited by the Aboriginal Australians Muurrai tribe of the Wiradjuri people. They called the land Dalman, meaning place of plenty. In 1815, British colonial settlements were established in the area and were expanded in 1818 when then Governor Lachlan Macquarie ended the rule that set limits for colonial settlements. The British people noted the Wiradjuri people for their clean mandiyaba, a possum-skin cape designed with artistic etchings known as burwurr. When restrictions that limited colonial settlements were removed, Wiradjuri people suffered dislocation, death and disturbance to their way of life.
