Prospect is a suburb in New South Wales, Australia, about 32 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district. This suburb is situated within the local government area of Blacktown City and is recognised as one of the oldest suburbs in Sydney. According to Landchecker, the suburb is approximately 13.9 square kilometres, has a population of more than 4,000, and has an average resident age of 37. The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that 56% of residents are Australians, while other ancestries are Indians, Filipinos, Fijians, Maltese and Sinhalese. English is the most spoken language, and Catholicism is the dominant religion among its residents.
In 1788, different tribes of Dharug people lived in Prospect before the British ships came to the land. More than a decade later, Lieutenant General Watkin Tench, a British marine officer, named the land after Prospect Hill, the area of the land where large-scale organised resistance by Aboriginal Australians took place. The town was the boundary between British colonists and Aboriginal people and initially became the habitat of freed Australian prisoners. In 1808, William Lawson, a British soldier and land owner, used 500 acres of the land to build houses, which he called Veteran Hall. In 2004, most parts of Prospect Hill were no longer a part of Prospect.
Prospect is considered a suburb that is great for young families. According to some residents, the place has several parks and play areas and often has a quiet ambience. The streets are always clean and well cared for by Blacktown City Council. Many residents have lived there for over a decade and have no plans to move to another suburb.
