Shellharbour is a village in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The village’s name is based on the local government area where it is located, the City of Shellharbour, and its central business district, Shellharbour City Centre. The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that the village has more than 3000 residents, and the population's average age is 44, 6 years older than the Australian national average. 76% of the population was born in Australia, while the rest were born in England and New Zealand. Religious groups in the village are Catholic and Anglican.
Different tribes of Aboriginal people first occupied Shellharbour for thousand years, and it was until 1817 that Europeans arrived and inhabited the land. The land’s coastline is believed to be littered with 9 shipwrecks, with the oldest shipwreck dating back to 1851. The last wreck recorded occurred in May 1943 when the Cities Service Boston, a United States oil tanker, went ashore at Bass Point. All shipwreck sites are protected under the State New South Wales Heritage Act 1977 and Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. Bass Point, one of the village’s historical sites, is home to various Aboriginal archaeological artefacts.
