Belmont is a suburb situated on a sandy peninsula created by the Tasman Sea in New South Wales, Australia, located within the local government area of Lake Macquarie City. The 2016 Australian Bureau of Statistics census showed that the suburb has more than 7000 residents, 52% females and 48% males, and the average age of residents is 50 years old, more than a decade older than the Australian national average age of 38 years old. 85% of the residents were born in Australia, while the rest were born in England and New Zealand. Religious groups in the suburb are Anglican and Catholic.
Belmont was initially occupied by Aboriginal Australians called the Awabakal tribe. In 1825, Reverend Lancelot Edward Threlkeld, an English missionary based in Australia, built a mansion in the area with a small-scale farm of wheat and Indian corn and hired the Awabakal tribe to help him. In 1873, Thomas Williamson the first school in the suburb, a single-roomed establishment adjacent to Maudeville Cottage. He made one after realising enough children were in the area to build a school. In 1874, he created the land’s first church. Three years later, he opened the Belmont Post Office and served as its Postmaster until his death.
Belmont is currently one of the significant areas of Lake Macquarie City. It is the 4th most populous suburb in the city. Many residents deem it a perfect place to raise a family, near everything, including beaches, lakes, schools and shopping centres. Some of its current residents were born there and still living there. On top of that, it has less recorded crime rate. Some statistics of Belmont include
Belmont is a suburb near multiple water bodies you can visit, not just every summer. Each beach gives different relaxation to its visitors and frees people from the stress of work. For example, Blacksmiths Beach is a children-friendly, patrolled beach with beautiful white sand. The beach is home to the Swansea Belmont Surf Lifesaving Club.
Another beach worth visiting is Redhead Beach, a long, sandy beach popular for surfing. The beach features a rocky cliff, a wooden walking track through dunes and wetlands, and its scenic view during the golden hour will put your mind at ease. Unlike Blacksmiths Beach, which is popular with families, it is popular with swimmers and surfers. Overall, Redhead Beach is a must-visit beach any time of the year.
If you want a different attraction other than beaches, visit Fernleigh Track, a rail trail built a la old school Belmont railway line. The track’s main feature is the Fernleigh Tunnel beneath the Pacific Highway. It shows many remnants of the industrial era of the suburb. Other places you may see include
