Enoggera is a suburb in Brisbane City of Queensland, Australia. The word "Enoggera" is spelt wrongly due to an error made by the Lands Office when the letter "U" was mistakenly replaced with the letter "N." So the actual name was "Eunoggera"; however, the bastardized Enoggera name has persisted till this day.
The meaning of the name is to Sing, dance, or play, and it is a Turrbal phrase "Youara-ngarea." The Turrbal people lived in the area before European settlers arrived, so the new settlers renamed the area after the original owners.
The occupation of the Europeans started in 1845 when John Brennan bought about 6 hectares of that land. Roughly six years later, Thomas Hayes moved in and purchased 33 acres. As time went on, the area developed into a farming community with vineyards and orchards dominating the area. Then during the 1860s, a goldfield track was constructed from Gympie, which passed through Enoggera. This track boosted the area's development and led to an increase in the number of residents moving to the area. It also boosted economic activities as well and so, in 1873, a Methodist Church was built in the town. During the same period, a school was built to educate the children in the community.
The Local government of Enoggera Division was established in 1887, sharing common borders with Kedron Brook, Alderley, Enoggera Creek, and beyond the Enoggera Dam. Then in 1930, the Shire of Enoggera was amalgamated in 1930 into Brisbane City.
