Canon Hill is a small suburb in Brisbane with a relatively small population of just over 5,500 people. Canon Hill was once the ancestral home of aboriginal people, and they lived here for centuries. However, clashes began to occur when the European settlers arrived in the area. The new arrivals accused the natives of intimidating them, which led to their eventual dispersal by the Native Police and the Mounted Police in November 1861. The unfortunate decline of the aboriginal population led to an increase in the number of settlers who arrived in the area.
In no time, grazing and game activities began to dominate the area, but a large part of Canon Hill remained bushland.
Although the story is disputed, the general consensus is that Canon Hill was named after the former residence of the Weeding family, who had a home on Wynnum Road. The Weedons constructed the house, which stood at the location in 1867 up until 1927, when it was destroyed by a fire. In 1889, the Cleveland Railway Line was opened, which transported humans and cargo from Cannon Hill to Cleveland. During the same period, lands were offered for sale close to the train station.
These two major developments opened up Canon Hill to even more development. Today, it is regarded as one of the most desirable residential communities to live in Brisbane.
