Ayr is a small town located in the Shire of Burdekin in Queensland State, Australia. This region is famous for its sugar cane plantations which are a rich source of sugar for the whole country. With a population of close to 9,000 people, Ayr can best be described as a small town with a small population of farmers, growers, and laborers.
The traditional dialect in this part used to be the Biri language which was spoken all through Central Queensland and all the way to the north. This language was also spoken in other towns like Bowen, Nebo, and Collinsville. It is on record that the first British exploration of the area took place in 1839 on the HMS Beagle. The voyage was led by a Captain named John Clements Wickham, who traveled for 10 miles along the waterway.
The waterway is now called Burdekin River, which is a popular location today. After Captain Wickham’s progress was stopped by a Weir built by the native tribes, no voyage was made until 1843 when Lieutenant John Ince, Frederick Evans, and Joseph Jukes sailed upriver on HMS Flyand arrived at the location that is now called Ayr. The explorers encountered lock tribes with whom they transacted business and exchanged gifts in a welcome ceremony
Such was the harmony between the Europeans and the natives that a shipwreck survivor named James Morrill lived with the natives for 17 years, counting from when he was washed ashore in 1846. It was from Morrill many of the known accounts of about the natives are known. Today the area is largely known for its agricultural economy, with many of its inhabitants active in the agric sector.
