Williamstown is a suburb in the local government of Hobson Bay City in Melbourne, Victoria. This part of Victoria used to be a center for maritime activities, which had a significant influence on the city's development. The first set of people to live in this part of Victoria were the Kulin nation's Yalukit tribe. They lived here for hundreds of years and roamed the coastal regions from Werribee to Hobson Bay. The indigenous people formed a part of the larger Bunurong clans from other coastal areas of modern Mornington, Werribee River, Wilsons Promontory, and West Port Bay. When the Europeans eventually arrived, the head of the trine was Benbow, and he served as one of the principal guides for John Batman, the explorer.
It is on record that the first Europeans to arrive in the area was a party led by Acting Lieutenant Charles Robbins in 1803. The officer would go on to explore Point Gellibrand and surrounding areas. Years later, John Batman would arrive in 1835, and it was he who recognized Melbourne as a suitable site for the establishment of a town. Williamstown will eventually be named after one of the captains of the ships carrying the traveling party.
The first land sale in Williamstown took place in 1837, and from then onward, the town developed just like other towns in the area that will now become Greater Melbourne. Localities around Williamstown include
