Torquay is a resort suburb on close to the Bass Strait in Victoria, Australia. The suburb is about 21 km south of the Geelong and provides access to Great Ocean Road. On the west of Torquay is Spring Creek, where you will find Zeally Bay and Point Danger. Torquay has a population of over 13,000 people, while most of the people who frequent the area are tourists and pleasure seekers.
Before a British settlement was established here, it used to be the home of the Wathaurong tribe. After the British settled in the greater Victoria area, tourists began to frequent the area from the 1860s in search of pleasure as they were drawn to the beauty of the sea. The tourist site was initially called Spring Creek, but in 1882, it was renamed, Puebla. Then, in 1871, James Follet settled in the area, and this was when the name Spring Creek changed to Torquay finally. The Torquay name was derived from the seaside town of Devon in England and was suggested by James Follet.
As many more settlers migrated to the area, so did development. The first Post Office was opened in 1894, then on April 3rd, 1908, a Spring Creek bridge was built to connect the neighboring town of Anglesea.
In recent times, development has completely transformed the area, which caused conflict between long-term residents and investors, with the former blaming the latter for distorting the natural features of the suburb. Today, Torquay is one of the best tourist locations in Victoria and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Some of the localities around Torquay include
