Kilmore is a small town in the State of Victoria and not very far from Melbourne, which is the capital city of Melbourne state. Kilmore is one of the oldest towns in Victoria with a long history of agricultural activities. Starting as a farming settlement centuries ago, it started witnessing rapid growth much faster than other surrounding settlements by the 1850s. This growth was stimulated because of the area’s unique agricultural features, so much so that its growth matched that of suburbs that were gold mining towns.

According to historical accounts, the original owners of Kilmore were the Taungurong people who lived in Kilmore Plains. The Taungurong were part of the larger Kulin nation who lived in parts of modern Victoria, including areas like Port Bay. As time went on, European Overlander explorers discovered the area. Then on March 21, 1837, Charles Bonnet discovered more territories around Kilmore. The track he made connected with the main Melbourne and Sydney highway and remained so for 139 years. Bonnet settled in Kilmore on June 17, 1837, and built a sheep station and an outstation outside the town. After he settled there, others began to migrate to the area searching for greener pastures, and Kilmore’s modernization took off from there.

This building was occupied by Smeaton’s descendants until 1966. After its erection in 1853, two more rooms were added to the structure. Powlett Street

A visit to Powlett street is like taking a walk back in time as the first settlers did. Powlett is filled with old buildings that have unique structural designs. Along the road is a former courthouse built with bluestone, and opposite the courthouse is a red brick police barrack. If you happen to visit Powlett street, don’t fail to stop at Bridley House, which was a residence of the town’s first doctor. Bridley House was built in 1862.

Town Hall

The Town Hall was built in 1894 and is a popular attraction for visitors to the town. Built in 1894, the structure and design of the town hall is similar to that seen with other buildings erected in Kilmore hundreds of years ago.

Kilmore Gaol

This maximum-security prison was opened in 1859, but decades later, it was converted to a private residence and a butter factory.
