Springvale is one of Melbourne’s foremost suburbs, with a land area of 22 km. The town is located to the Southeast of Melbourne in the local government area of Dandenong. Springvale has a thriving population of more than 21,000 residents that continues to fluctuate by the thousand.
Originally the home of the Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung tribes, this area was their ancestral home for thousands of years before the coming of migrants from the west across the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The area was a permanent source of water and food for tribal folks, which best explains why they lived here for thousands of years. When the Europeans finally arrived, they found relief here among the Dandenong ranges, which gave rise to its name.
As more migrants arrived in the area, the local population grew. By 1840, it became the permanent residence of a South African named Christian Ludolph Johannes De Villiers shit eventually became the head of the local police. The first post office was opened on September 12, 1864, but closed down in 1892. By 1887, a railway station was opened, which thrived for years before it was renamed in 1902. The lost office went under further renovation, and a new one was opened in 1978.
