Toorak is an eastern city in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located within the local government area of the City of Stonnington. Toorak’s name was derived from the house of the same name, an Italian-style residential settlement built by merchant James Jackson sometime in 1849. The house’s name is believed to be originated from the Aboriginal people Woiwurrung’s language, which means black crow or reedy swamp. Since 1854, Toorak House has served as the residence of the governors of Victoria until the construction of the Government House in 1876. Some of the original 19th-century mansions in the city remain today due to the high land value.
