Belmont is located in the southern suburb of Victoria, Australia, and the name means “Beautiful Hill.” This locality is separated from the central business district, not Geelong, which is why it is often called Belmont Geelong.
Belmont is primarily a residential area with a small industry located along the Barwon Heads Road. Going by tut last population census, Belmont has a 13,616 population.
Some 25,000 years ago, the area was occupied by the Wathaurong people who lived in the area until 1836, when Drm Alexander Thompson established a pastoral range in the area. Thompson was the mayor of Geelong, and he managed the site from his Kardinia homestead.
Despite the development brought by white settlers, the area didn’t have a secure bridge over the Barwon River until 1848. Years later, in 1852, the bridge was swept off by a flood, so Belmont remained without a bridge until 1853, when punts were merged together to form a bridge. By the late 1850s, the town began to develop, and its first Post Office was opened in January 1860.
In 1950, Alexander Thompson started selling part of his land holdings with 93 allotments put up for sale, including Mount Pleasant, Roslyn Road, and Belmont township. More sales followed in 1886, with 25 acres of crown land sold out. However, an economic depression in the 1890s reduced sales for a short time.
